
People tell me all the time, "You're just naturally mechanical."
I always laugh.
I'm not.
I'm curious.
Those are two very different things.
I grew up around boats. I learned to back trailers down dark boat ramps because I was too embarrassed to practice in front of the guys. I'd wait until everyone had gone home so nobody could watch me jackknife the trailer six times before I finally got it right.
When our boat broke down, I learned to change spark plugs and troubleshoot a starter because there wasn't much choice. At two o'clock in the morning, when you're at the opposite end of the lake and the bar closed, you either figure it out or start walking.
None of this happened because I was gifted.
It happened because life kept handing me problems.
The biggest lesson came from an alternator.
I was a competitive water-skier and one day after work, I drove an hour to the lake to train. When I got there, the group of bullies who had skied before us had left a note.
"Jennifer, don't use the Malibu until you change the alternator."
That was it.
I didn't even know what an alternator was.
My first instinct was to give up, get back in the car, and drive the hour home.
Mike, my training partner and best friend, had other ideas.
He handed me the new alternator and said, "Go find where this goes."
So I timidly opened the engine compartment and stared.
Eventually I found a part that looked about the same.
"Good," he said. "Now take it off."
He handed me a screwdriver.
No lecture.
No demonstration.
No rescue.
Just enough confidence to make me believe I could figure it out.
A half hour later, the boat was running.
Looking back, changing the alternator wasn't the important part.
The important part was discovering that most mechanical things aren't magic.
They're just puzzles.
That lesson stayed with me.
Years later, I became a tournament water ski driver.
Back then, PerfectPass cruise control was still evolving. It wasn't the simple system people know today. Every skier had different settings. Different boats behaved differently. Programming it wasn't exactly intuitive, and installing or troubleshooting it was enough to intimidate most people.
So every year, when the new manual came out, I'd memorize it.
Not because I loved reading manuals.
Because knowledge gave me confidence.
When I moved to North Carolina, there weren't any female tournament drivers.
To be honest, I wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms.
But something funny happened.
Nobody wanted to read the manual.
Nobody wanted to troubleshoot the system.
Eventually I became the person everyone called because I understood how it worked.
Not because I was the smartest person there.
Because I was willing to learn.
Sometimes I think people assume confidence comes first.
It doesn't.
Confidence comes after you've struggled through enough things to realize you usually survive them.
Then life happened.
For almost ten years, I stopped learning.
I was with someone who naturally took care of the mechanical things, and I let him.
When that relationship ended, I bought an Airstream.
Suddenly I was standing in campgrounds by myself, staring at systems I didn't understand anymore.
Someone told me, "Your fifth trip will be easier than your first."
I decided I was going to get through five trips that season no matter what happened.
The universe apparently accepted that as a challenge.
Almost every trip, something major broke.
The jack.
The steps.
The converter.
The hitch sheared in half on the interstate.
Usually when I was alone.
Usually somewhere that help wasn't immediately available.
So I figured it out.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I had to.
Here's what I've learned after all these years.
The people who seem "mechanical" usually aren't seeing something you can't.
They've simply spent years asking questions, reading manuals, making mistakes, and trying again.
That's exactly how I approach Airstreams today.
I don't know everything.
Nobody does.
But I'm rarely afraid to start learning.
And that's what I hope to give other owners.
Not the answers to every problem.
The confidence to believe they can solve more than they think.
Because nothing about an Airstream requires male body parts.
It requires curiosity.
And curiosity is something every one of us can learn.
